How ProofScore works

The full, public method behind every business score. No business can pay to change it.

The basics

ProofScore runs from 1 to 5. It is a weighted average of the star ratings of all published reviews, adjusted for proof, recency and the number of reviews.

Weights by proof

Reviews with stronger proof count more. These are the weights in use today:

ProofWeight
Transaction-verified1.0
Verified after review0.9
Invited0.8
Identity-verified0.7
Imported0.5
Unverified0.4

Recent reviews count more

A review's weight halves every 24 months, so recent experiences count more than old ones.

Businesses with few reviews

Every score starts as if the business already had 10 reviews at 3.8 stars. With only a few reviews the score stays close to 3.8, so a handful of 5-star reviews can't outrank thousands of real ones. The effect fades as reviews come in.

The formula

ProofScore = (C × m + Σ wᵢ × rᵢ) ÷ (C + Σ wᵢ), where r is each review's stars, w its weight (proof weight × recency), C = 10 and m = 3.8. The result is rounded to one decimal.

Changes are recorded

Scores are recalculated automatically every few minutes. Every change is recorded with its reason, and nobody changes a score by hand.

What never changes a score

  • Paying for Proofwell or any plan
  • Replies, reports or promotions from the business
  • Follow-up questions and their answers
