How reviews work

Anyone can review a real experience. Here is how we check reviews and keep them fair.

Who can write a review

Anyone with a Proofwell account who had a real experience with the business can review it. You don't need to be invited, and businesses can't choose who reviews them.

How we check proof

Where possible we match a review to a real order, payment or booking. Each review shows a badge that says exactly how it was checked.

Transaction-verifiedWe checked this review against a real order or payment.
InvitedThe business invited this customer after an order. Every customer is invited, not just happy ones.
Identity-verifiedThe reviewer verified their identity, but not the purchase.
ImportedMoved from another review tool with proof, checked by our team. Shown with its original date.
UnverifiedNo proof yet. Still a real account, but it counts less towards the score.

Fake and suspicious reviews

Every review is checked automatically for signs of fraud, such as repeated devices, bursts of reviews and copied text. Suspicious reviews are held for a person on our team. Suspected fakes are never deleted automatically: we ask for proof first.

What businesses can and can't do

  • Reply publicly, or privately by email, to any review
  • Report reviews that break our rules; a person on our team decides
  • Ask for proof when they believe a review isn't genuine; the reviewer has 7 days to send it
  • Never delete, edit, hide or pay to reorder reviews

How the score works

ProofScore uses all published reviews, with more weight for proof and recent experiences. No plan or payment changes it.
